'
Using talent, training, commitment, and creativity to do the work that he enjoys, Harvey Harnish has worked in the safety profession since 1979.
\

Colorado has been Harvey\'s home for most of his life. He graduated from Alameda High School in Lakewood, Colorado, attended Trinidad State Junior College, and then enrolled in Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado from which he graduated with a BA in Psychology. Trinidad then became his home, and he and his wife Debbie, a second grade teacher, still reside there.
\

From the 5th grade to the present Harvey has enjoyed golf. His interest and enjoyment of this sport in high school opened the opportunity for him to play on a high school team and that led to a college golf scholarship.
\

Harvey\'s BA in Psychology determined the first job: a counselor at Colorado Boys\' Ranch in La Junta. Life\'s journey took a new turn in the road when Harvey\'s friend opened a surface coal mine, taught Harvey mining and mine safety, and offered Harvey a job. For two years, he worked a surface mine safety job on the day shift, drove 48 miles, and then worked in an underground mine on the swing shift. The locations were in the Trinidad and Walsenburg areas.
\

The safety profession has remained as Harvey\'s choice; he has worked in the mining industry and construction industry, and he has instructed college level courses in occupational safety and health.
\

Twelve years ago, Harvey brought his expertise in construction and general industry to Rocky Mountain Education Center at Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood, Colorado. He is the chairperson for the electrical and machine guarding courses at RMEC and provides training in many OSHA construction courses both on campus and off-site locations. Harvey requested that a thank-you to his students be included here:
\

"I would like to thank all of the students who have been through my courses. Through your comments, questions, stories, experiences, pictures, and articles that you shared with me over the years, it has made me a much better instructor and has given me the opportunity to share those experiences and materials with other students in the classroom."

\

In 1994, the safety profession journey took another path, one of risk and creativity; Harvey established Universal Safety Consulting L.L.C. Since that adventure began, his company has provided safety consulting services to companies and organizations nationwide. Services provided include the following: Safety Inspections, Safety Audits, OSHA Compliance Training, Safety Training, Safety Program Development, and Safety Consulting Services. Some of the companies and organizations who have utilized services provided through his company are Lockheed Martin Corporation, Adolph Coors Company, Morrison Knudson, Washington Group, & OSHA.
\

					   '
In 1993 Jeannine began attending Red Rocks Community College and working as a part-time student hourly for the Occupation Safety and Health Degree program. The OSHA degree program was housed and run in conjunction with the new OSHA Training Institute, Rocky Mountain Education Center (RMEC), at Red Rocks Community College. She graduated from RRCC in 1995 with an AA with an emphasis in Psychology and was then offered a full-time position at RMEC/OSHA Training Institute as a receptionist.

After several years as a receptionist, Jeannine\'s career moved forward. The merger of the Red Rocks Training Institute (RRTI) (non-compliance, non-credit business training) with the RMEC provided an opportunity for Jeannine to assist in the transition of the two programs into one organization. The new job responsibilities included working with local businesses in the application and administration of Colorado First and Existing Industry Grants, marketing the RMEC at local events by attending conferences, attending business and industry consortiums, and working with local government and economic development agencies.

The job title and responsibilities took on a new look in 2002 with Jeannine\'s being named Outreach Coordinator at Rocky Mountain Education Center. In 2003, the U.S. Department of Labor OSHA began to entrust each OSHA Education Center to administer the OSHA 10 Hour and 30 Hour Outreach Training Program and to report training information directly to them. The OSHA Outreach Training Program allows individuals completing the Train-the-Trainer courses in Construction, General Industry, and Disaster Site Worker as authorized through the RMEC to conduct 10, 16, and 30 hour training, to submit documentation meeting the minimum requirements and to request cards that will be distributed to individuals that they trained. As the new Outreach Coordinator, Jeannine\'s responsibilities became and continue to include classroom presentations on the outreach program and point of contact for trainers\' questions and inquiries. She verifies trainer documentation, administers cards, and tracks trainer data, as well as compiles and reports training activity to the Department of Labor for almost 3, 000 trainers.

As Jeannine reflects on her long and interesting career with RMEC, she shares that what she "enjoys most about working at the RMEC is that every week we have a new group of adult learners who are here because they want to be; that makes a difference in their educational attitudes." She also appreciates that "all of the training participants have something to offer from their personal experiences that makes every class unique and interesting."

While working in a career at RMEC, Jeannine values "meeting clients from many locations and training clients all over the world whose main objective is the safety of people." While remaining at an educational institution, Jeannine has discovered that "every organization I meet with, whether it is business, industry, or safety, I learn something from each one."

When you visit or train at Rocky Mountain Education Center, you may have the opportunity to meet with Jeannine Kreller and to discover that she is interested in what she can appreciate and learn from your unique experiences. Her humor, energy, and enthusiasm will add to the friendly services that RMEC offers.
',

Horizon Middle School in Aurora and Horizon High School in Thornton are the schools she attended. Trish and her brother Fernando are part of a larger family that includes their dad\'s family (six children) and their mother\'s family (5 children). Large family events, like graduations, birthdays, receptions, and weddings, are guaranteed to have places on Trish\'s social calendar.

Trish also gives her time enthusiastically to interests that she and her "Significant Other" Kevin share: their dog Destiny and cars. With her Pontiac Trans Am and his Corvette in their past, they now take her Saturn Ion and his Jimmy Typhoon two times per month to the Test and Tune Nights at Bandimere Speedway. Attending races, especially ones in which their friends race, are events that they look forward to and enjoy.

Seeking work that is enjoyable and interesting led Trish to interview at Rocky Mountain Education Center two and one-half years ago. She was working as a temp at the State Department of Labor and noticed the Red Rocks Community College job opportunity on the state web site\'s job postings. This work has been a perfect fit for her, and with the on-the-job training and her existing skills, experience, and interests, her job satisfaction continues to affirm her decision.

Trish\'s employment at RMEC has provided another opportunity: attending RRCC where she is taking core classes and contemplating an Associates Degree in Business Administration.

The variety in her daily work, along with her vibrant co-workers, keeps Trish happy to come to work. Her responsibilities include answering incoming calls and processing on-site, off-site, and online certificates and cards at the completion of OSHA, RMEC, and CETC classes. She takes charge of the online OSHA classes by tracking students who register, sending class materials, and receiving and filing student data forms and OSHA evaluation forms.

If you have taken any classes at RMEC or if you plan to enroll, you have interacted or you will interact with Trish and experience one of the many delightful employees in this department. When asked what she likes best about working there, Trish responded, "The people I work with. . . each has a positive attitude and a sense of humor; they are friendly and out-going. I like working in a small office where people really know each other. We each do our work, and we also step in for each other. We are just like a family, and we do have our ups and downs."

To experience the warm greeting and the personal care that Trish and the other employees offer, Trish encourages you to come and visit Rocky Mountain Education Center at Red Rocks Community College.
',

					   '
Have you ever wanted to meet someone who has taken many adventures and whose life\'s journey took him through learning, working, creating, teaching, and helping others along the way? The opportunity is here in this sketch of Joe McFadden\'s on-going life adventure.

Joe was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Because his father was in the Canadian Armed Forces, Joe had the opportunity to live in different base areas and to attend different schools. His father was transferred to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado as part of an officer exchange program created to expand the horizons of the cadets. While living in Colorado Springs and attending Air Academy High School, Joe expanded his own horizons when he met, interacted with, and observed many people from other cultures.

When Joe\'s father was transferred back to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Joe completed high school in a college preparatory and accelerated program. Joe returned to the United States to attend college at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado where he earned a BA in Medical Technology with minors in Chemistry and Biology. Following that degree, he completed graduate courses and studies in Industrial Hygiene, Toxicology, and Occupational Health and Safety. Other professional development includes these areas:

State Vocational teaching credentials (post-secondary/adult) in environmental technology and chemistry

Certification in AHERA, HAZWOPER, Environmental Assessment & Compliance Inspections, RCRA, Healthcare Hazard Communication & Compliance, numerous OSHA standards, JCAHO (EOC and QA) and NFPA Life Safety Code and Health Care Facilities

Certified International Healthcare Safety Professional

Certified Toxicologist

Certified Medical Technologist

So many adventures in Joe\'s professional work history make up his complex and exciting journey including Red Rocks Community College and Rocky Mountain Education Center. From 1972 to 1983, some of the work history includes developing and managing safety, regulatory compliance, and toxicology programs and departments for a national medical laboratory. Managing multiple safety, industrial hygiene, chemistry, and environmental health departments and programs in general industry and healthcare can also be added to his history. In 1980 and continuing to 1990, Joe was the Director of Safety Industrial Hygiene, Health and Special Projects at Rose Medical Center in Denver, Colorado.

Experiences during the period of 1983 to 2007 include positions as director, consultant, and developer of corporate safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental health departments in healthcare and general industry. Joe became an adjunct instructor at Red Rocks Community College (1990 - 1998) teaching classes in Chemistry of Hazardous Materials, Fire Science, and Environmental Compliance Technology. In 1994 he became one of the first instructors in the Rocky Mountain Education Center\'s OSHA Training Institute at RRCC where he developed a Basic Chemistry and Toxicology Course, a Workplace Violence Prevention Course, a Laboratory Safety and Health Course, a Hazard Evaluation and Risk Assessment Course, and an Introduction to Accident Investigation Course. In addition to teaching in the courses that he developed, Joe also teaches in at least nineteen other courses for the RMEC OTI, both on-site and off-site, on a routine basis. Another highlight of this period is Joe\'s establishment of his own company in Lakewood, Colorado, McFadden and Associates, L.L.C., Consultants in Safety, Health and Industrial Hygiene.

Considering Joe\'s varied interests in the health and safety fields, what are his current areas of emphasis? His time is spent as a full-time consultant, educator/trainer, guest lecturer, and community college instructor in these areas: workers\' compensation, JCAHO, OSHA, legal matters, toxicology, safety management, industrial hygiene, design and code review, regulatory compliance, risk management, employee health, laboratory safety, problem solving and troubleshooting, department and budgetary development and management, accident prevention and investigation, employee management, policy and procedure development and implementation, hazardous chemicals, LASER safety, safety and health audits, TB and Bloodborne Pathogens, team building and management, workplace violence and terrorism, radiation safety and health, mold remediation, and indoor air quality.

With all this talent and experience demonstrated in his work, Joe has devoted time to his community. This is where an introduction to Joe\'s wife Katy comes in. While Joe was attending UNC in Greeley, Colorado, he met and dated Katy. During this time, Katy was a Girl Scout leader and taught camping and survival for Girl Scouts and their leaders. Joe has joined her in this volunteer effort for over 20 years, and Katy continues to train Girl Scout leaders in troop leadership and outdoor skills. Katy is also a bilingual elementary school teacher. Along the way, Joe and Katy were married in 1975 and continue to enjoy camping, traveling, admiring nature, and being with each other.

The staff and students at Rocky Mountain Education Center\'s OSHA Training Institute value Joe\'s talent, instruction, and expertise. Joe values his opportunity to instruct at the Institute and states "My experience and symbiotic relationships with Rich Hawkins (Executive Director of Rocky Mountain Education Center) and the incredible Institute staff, consisting of Jeannette, Trish, Jeannine, Danielle, Ron, and Jodi make working at this institute both a pleasure and honor." Joe appreciates being permitted to "market his consulting business," outside of the class time. "Rich allows this within the atmosphere" that is so welcoming to all visitors in the Center. "Opportunities are given" to instructors by the staff so that when calls come in for information that Joe can provide, he is given an opportunity to respond to those inquiries. "Many of my clients come from the classes I teach and from responding to questions outside of the classroom."

Please contact Joseph McFadden for lists of Consulting, Legal, and Education/Teaching Affiliations; Professional Memberships and Associations; selections from Presentations and Course Instructions; or titles of books to which he contributed/edited text, and names of his published articles and journals.

If you have a question or seek information about any of the subject areas that are cited in Joe McFadden\'s Profile, he would be pleased to interact with you. He is devoted to creating safer and healthier work sites as well as developing an appreciation and enjoyment of our environment. Casual conversations and professional interactions always have a place in his days.

Please contact/visit Joseph McFadden:
Joseph S. '
Meet Ron Schuetz, Equipment Manager, Rocky Mountain Education Center at Red Rocks Community College. Qualifying for a "Colorado Native" bumper sticker, Ron\'s proof is that he was born and raised in Longmont, Colorado. Ron\'s relatives and some of his immediate family still reside there. What a wonderful foundation: being raised
in a large family circle that offers much time enjoyed together.

After graduating from Longmont High School, Ron spent four years in the U.S. Navy that gave him some incredible adventures that he can still recall with appreciation. His training for work on an aircraft carrier was completed in Lakehurst, New Jersey at the Navy\'s (A) School, and his position was Aviation Boatswain\'s Mate in "Top Side Safety." Ron was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia making him one of the "east coast sailors"; from there his cruises took him to ports in the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean. Ron\'s most exciting cruise that brings back vivid memories was the cruise on the USS Coral Sea (CV 43) that departed from San Diego, went around the world, and ended at the Naval base in Norfolk.

Fortunately Ron\'s time in the U.S. Navy (1982-1986) was during peacetime for our country so travel was relatively safe. His appreciation for the USA is reflected in his stories about his world cruise that led to realization about "what we have that other countries do not have like clean running water and clean streets." He developed a deeper "appreciation for family." He recalls leaving home as a teenager and returning as a more mature person because of "growing experiences" like learning "to get along with shipmates" and being taught "work ethics." To sum up the adventure, Ron calls the Navy experience "the school of hard knocks."

In 1986, Ron was a civilian again, pondering what kind of work he wanted to do; during this time he had various jobs. In 1990, Ron\'s interest in the Environmental Health and Safety field led him to enroll in the Environmental Science program at Front Range Community College in Westminster, Colorado. During his studies, Ron became a student hourly in that department. After graduating with an Associates Degree in Environmental Science, Ron was employed at the college as a contractor to assist in the classes that he had taken for his degree. He became an instructor and equipment manager serving the college\'s clients on and off campus. While working at FRCC, Ron met his wife Ann. They were married in 2003, and Ann still works for the college in Computer Services.

In 2001, Ron\'s work with Front Range Community College\'s Environmental Science Department ended with the closing of that dept. Because of his interactions with many people in his field, Ron decided to contact Rich Hawkins, Director of Rocky Mountain Center in Red Rocks Community College. Ron wanted to join the team in the OSHA Training Institute known as a leader in environmental, health and safety training. Rich Hawkins considered that there may be a vacancy for someone with Ron\'s skills and then hired Ron as a contractor from 2001 to 2003. In 2003, he became an employee in the Professional/Technical category. The unique challenge for Ron has been to function in two areas: the safety field and the environmental field. At FRCC, Ron spent about 20% of his time as a sole instructor in a classroom; at RRCC, Ron spends about 50-60% in this capacity. He considers this a "growing experience," one in which he has "enjoyed" the rewarding "challenges."

Ron\'s appreciation for his work and co-workers provides a special gratitude for Harvey Harnish and Joe McFadden who "helped me to develop my presentations and to achieve goals that years ago I would have thought unattainable." What are the personal satisfactions from Ron\'s training work at Rocky Mountain Education Center? His response: "working with people" as they accomplish the training that they need to make them "safer in their jobs and to find stability in their employment." Ron recalls a time when he got out of the Navy and was looking for work like his safety work in the Navy. His encouragement to trainees is to find a job that "makes getting up in the morning worthwhile and one that helps them to meet their goals while working in the safety industry."

How about an exciting new challenge? This year, Ron and his wife Ann became grandparents when Ann\'s daughter and her husband welcomed their first baby, Ava Ann. Ron marvels at this wonderful addition to his life and is learning about being a new grandfather one day at a time! There are other "kids" waiting for Ann\'s and Ron\'s attention: their two dogs – Jenny (11) a black Basset Hound & Labrador mix, known fondly as a "LabraWeenie"; Patches (7) a white with black patches Boarder Collie mix, known by a trait true to her breed: round-up the heard (family and Jenny).

What about an interest that presents an exciting challenge and a goal? Ron enjoys scuba diving; he is a certified diver who has included this sport in his vacations, like the ones to Hawaii, California, Florida, and Mexico. Ron swims 1.25 miles every morning and plans to enhance his training to reach the goal of completing the "Escape from Alcatraz Swim."

The value of family, love of new adventures, service to country, respect for others, and gratitude for work he values and enjoys create a glimpse into the life of Ron Schuetz. When you visit Rocky Mountain Education Center at Red Rocks Community College, spend some time with Ron; he will prove to you that the art of storytelling is alive and well in America. You will find that he will take the time to listen to whatever you would like to share, as well. This will also be an opportunity to express your gratitude to Ron, as we do to past and present military personnel, "Thank you for honorably serving our country."
',
					   '

Meet Rocky Mountain Education Center employee Danielle Trujillo. Telling her story provides the opportunity to observe a life time history in Denver, Colorado and a fifteen year history with Red Rocks Community College.

Danielle has always lived in the Denver area, and all her education was experienced here, as well. She grew up in a small family: her parents and one sister. St. Catherine\'s Catholic School and Thornton Elementary School provided her early learning, and Thornton High School offered learning for her teenage years. Danielle\'s life took a turn because of having a child early in life. She recalls, "I wanted to finish school, but I chose the long route in achieving my educational goals."

Danielle\'s goal was to attend college and to earn a certificate and then a degree; Red Rocks played a part in that plan. Her starting point, though, was Community College of Denver where she turned her love of education and desire to succeed into an Information Technology Certificate.

Launching from her success and continuing to work toward a degree, Danielle enrolled in a degree program at RRCC where all her CCD credits were accepted and counted toward a business degree. In 1992, besides attending classes, she became a student hourly as an administrative assistant to Shelli Bischoff, former Director of Red Rocks Institute, a training institute specializing in non-credit business soft skills. Danielle credits Shelli with "making a difference with school and job skills due to the initial opportunity and encouragement she offered with college classes and the job." The planning and working toward a career came to fruition because the certificate and degree programs, along with Danielle\'s student hourly assignment, all matched her goal: a career in business.

She earned her Associate of Applied Science Degree in Business Technology in 1996 and continued to work in Red Rocks Institute (RRI). Another recognition for Danielle was having her work category be upgraded to Administrative Assistant III.

In 1998, changes at RRCC brought about changes in Danielle\'s new career. Two college programs merged: Red Rocks Institute (RRI) and OSHA Training Institute (OTI) with Rich Hawkins, Executive Director of OTI, becoming the director of both programs. How did that affect Danielle\'s career? She remembers, "Rich inherited me with Red Rocks Institute."

Since she became "inherited" by Rich and a part of what became Rocky Mountain Education Center (RMEC), Danielle has continued to move forward in her career. The fruits of the journey are her training and skills in marketing, graphics, and lay-out that have resulted in the yearly RMEC catalog and all brochures. She is also responsible for accounts payable and independent contractor contracts, and that explains why instructors are so fond of her: "I initiate their paycheck." A recent promotion changed Danielle\'s career title to Program Assistant I.

With all the dedication to her career, Danielle continues to devote her time and focus to her priority: her family. She is very proud of her two sons, Eric, 21 and Matthew, 9. Eric is a senior at University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado and will graduate ahead of schedule in December 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with dual emphases in marketing and management. Eric is a member of AKPsi, a social business fraternity. Matthew is in the 4th grade at St. Bernadette\'s Catholic School in Lakewood, Colorado. He keeps busy with his studies along with basketball, baseball, and Boy Scouts. The family enjoys time together and just returned from their first family vacation to California visiting all the tourist attractions; their favorites were Disneyland, Universal Studios and Sea World.

Danielle also makes time for her personal interests like scrap booking (creating albums with favorite photos and captions) and walking. Included in her personal time are hours filled with Matthew\'s games and school activities, as well as weekend visits with Eric. She also loves time spent with her three ("extremely spoiled") small dogs, two Chihuahuas and a Yorkie Terrier.

Danielle\'s history with RRCC continues as she credits her colleagues at RMEC with "great friendships and continuous support for personal and professional development," and they consider her as the "middle of the road personality, the one whom the staff counts on to be at peace with everyone." Learning on the job continues as Danielle ponders what class to take in the Spring 2008 Semester. In phone conversations and s in-person conferences with Danielle, everyone is treated to her full attention, her warm welcome, her dedication to excellence, and her genuine consideration and concern for others. Please take the opportunity to meet Danielle Trujillo at RMEC.

',
					   '

One of the original employees of Rocky Mountain Education Center in the OSHA program at Red Rocks Community College is Jeannette Werner. Let\'s take a look at the journey that led her to the career that suits her so well.

Jeannette is a "home grown" Coloradan who was born and raised in Johnstown, Colorado near Greeley, Colorado. She is one of three daughters of Colorado native parents who come from large families. Most of Jeannette\'s family and relatives still reside in the Northern Colorado area.

Jeannette\'s high school years were spent volunteering time in service to others, preparing her for college, and developing her love of gardening and animals. She spent two summers on missionary trips with Teen Missions International. The first mission was in Canada where she worked at a mission that was next to a native North American reservation. Volunteering to build dorms for the teenagers at the mission and working with children and teens at the mission and on the reservation gave her a first-hand look at difficulties experienced in that culture and the reward that comes from making a difference in their lives. The second mission trip started with a "boot camp" in Florida to become acquainted with a new culture and continued into the "field" in Germany. Working again with "troubled teens" made a difference to them and made Jeannette believe that she was the one who benefited.

A high school class in psychology led to a later decision to major in this field in college. Friends and family had told her that she was a good listener, and because she was always interested in "how the mind works," Jeannette knew what she wanted to study. During the high school psychology course, she took the opportunity to visit group homes for children and assisted living homes for elderly adults.

A recurring theme in Jeannette\'s life has been her love and concern for animals. Her earliest recollection is of visits every Sunday after church to her grandfather\'s dairy farm. Her grandfather was a role model exampling love of animals and gardening. She has always strived to emulate those traits: "I want to be just like him." She has demonstrated this devotion through her caring for her own pets and by volunteering to help to rescue pets. Jeannette\'s current "4-legged children" are two Akita dogs, the breed known for hunting bears and showing loyalty; they are considered to be a Japanese symbol of good luck. Her "Treasures" are Suji Yama, age nine, male with a thick white and fawn coat; Yuki Kumo, age nine, female with a thick white coat. Another treasured pet in the "family" was her cat Mew for whom she has fond memories. Recently, Jeannette went through a training program preparing her to do volunteer work for Almost Home Adoptions, a cat and kitten rescue service at 92nd and Wadsworth in Westminster, Colorado.

What journeys led to Jeannette\'s work with OSHA at Rocky Mountain Education Center? Her first job was as an administrative assistant in Financial Aid at Colorado Christian University in her first and second years. She then moved up to Assistant Director of Financial Aid and remained in that position until graduation. After graduation, Jeannette visited a career center, filled out applications, and took Colorado state employment tests on various sites. These active steps led to an interview at Red Rocks Community College for an Administrative Assistant II position in Instructional Services, a job she accepted and worked in during 1992 and 1993.

The next decision provided a new path on her career journey that took trust and adventure. While working in Instructional Services, Jeannette met Rich Hawkins, the pioneer director of the new OSHA Training Institute at RRCC. He indicated that a position was available in that department and that the position might meet her interest in a challenging career. When she took the challenge in 1993, she told herself, "I\'ll stay five years." Why has she remained and why did she become Program Coordinator of a thriving free enterprise training department? "There is always something new; no days are exactly alike: new students/clients attend classes, and I am challenged to be innovative and to be in a continuous pursuit of excellence." Jeannette credits Rich Hawkins, Director of Rocky Mountain Education Center: "I am excited to work for someone with vision and personality." Credits are also given here to "great co-workers, the instructors, and clients." Attending trade shows adds adventure and interest to her job.

Besides her enjoyable work, Jeannette makes time for her hobbies that others view as the benefits of her talents. She writes poetry, creates charcoal sketches, and sometimes sings solo for weddings at her church. Time is always created for enjoying visits with her family and staying in touch with college friends.

When you visit RMEC, you will notice the lively, upbeat, and dedicated atmosphere created by employees like Jeannette Werner. Her genuine concern for others, her personal and work-related integrity, her sense of humor, and her hard work are demonstrated here and will make you want to sit awhile in her office and have a relaxed chat, maybe about training and definitely about pets.
',
